Two bills seeking to establish regulation and criminal penalties related to illicit pill press machines will get their first hearing in front of the state Legislature this week. On Tuesday, the Joint Committee on the Judiciary will hear public testimony on both HD.58 and HD.3071. Pill press machines, which compress powder into tablets, have historically had legitimate and legal uses by the pharmaceutical profession and people who make their own supplements, and still do.

After being acquired by Boston Medical Center, two Massachusetts hospitals formerly operated by the now-defunct Steward Health Care have new names. St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Brighton has been rebranded as Boston Medical Center — Brighton, while Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton is now Boston Medical Center — South. “New names, renewed commitment,” Boston Medical Center touted of the newly announced uniformity across all three of its hospital facilities.

After a loss of federal funding forced the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition to shut down its citizenship assistance programming, the organization has joined a national lawsuit against the Trump administration. The Boston-based coalition, known as MIRA, lost $300,000 in funding from the Citizenship and Integration Grant Program in late January after the Department of Homeland Security terminated all related grants.
