Christina Lee, a busy illustrator whose work regularly appears in both new (Vox) and traditional media (Business Week, Wall Street Journal), introduced their comics to the wider world relatively recently, with a pretty solid beginner cartoonist’s mini which was followed shortly after by a major evolution with her books The Method and Object. Often at shows, I’m given work or traded comics but, sadly, I read less and less of it.

It seems impossible to imagine comics without Milton Caniff. It’s not just that he was popular during his time; many comics strips that were extremely popular in the first half of the 20th century are all but forgotten today. Not Caniff, though, his name and style lived on in the works of followers, which included talents like Kirby and Toth; therefore, his name lives through their modern decedents as well. His influence, as both an artist and a writer, wasn’t limited to the United States either.

A man and a woman—the former a host, the latter his guest—sit together for tea. They talk about a new menace in town, creeping around at night and invading people’s homes, “collecting things.” The woman has heard about this ‘nightwalker,’ and she doesn’t seem particularly concerned, only intrigued. She asks the man to explain his process. Man: When the moon is rich and ripe, he’ll step outside for a walk. Woman: In what direction does he go?

The principle at the heart of A nnie Baker's plays can most easily be described as the "communality born of circumstance." Most of Baker's plays are some variation on the following premise: A group of otherwise-unrelated strangers are brought together in a single purgatorial space; slowly, the exterior world melts away. When they leave the room, that whole world dies with them.

When Sebastiana Blank wakes up in the hospital, about a third of the way into 1949 , she cannot speak English and does not understand her surroundings. She is the best detective in the biz - except she's not. Not really. This is a pivotal moment in Dustin Weaver's recent standalone volume from Image Comics, originally serialized in his one-man-anthology Paklis. Detective Blank, we are told earlier, exists in two parallel points in time.

There are, broadly speaking, two ways to listen to the 1968 song “Do It Again” by the Beach Boys. If you listen to it on its own, paying little attention to the rest of the Beach Boys’ discography up until that point, then all you’re getting is an effort that, though largely straightforward, is incredibly charming and compelling, a highlight of late-’60s pop-rock.

Mary Tyler MooreHawk opens, after a publisher’s note about a fictional other publisher, with an introduction from Dave Baker, ostensibly the artist behind this graphic novel, informing us that, no, he did not create this book. It was mailed to him from the future. We learn, eventually, that a different Dave Baker – TWO Dave Bakers, in fact – from the future – a future? – created the contents of Mary Tyler MooreHawk. Perhaps one of them is future him. Perhaps not. It’s unclear. That is fine.

The horror genre often draws on illness and disease as a thematic vein made (meta)physical through metaphor. See, for example, how Coppola, in his rendition of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, draws attention to how the vampire trope is related to our concerns regarding diseases transmitted by blood. Maybe it is because an illness itself feels alien, so much like an invasion or attack upon our corporal sovereignty, that it is so pregnant with possibilities for those who produce horror.
