When Betsy Pittard was 16, she took a small job after school with a do-it-yourself (DIY) jewelry bead shop in her hometown of Macon, Ga. Back then, she had no idea it would ignite her life’s passion and become a lucrative career. Instead, she was looking to make a little spending money. But, Pittard explains, she either had to learn how to bead or find another job, so she learned the technique and worked at the store throughout high school.

Richmond and Columbia county schools teamed up to build the Savannah River Region’s first Junior Achievement (JA) Discovery Center, spanning roughly 30,000 square feet. The Discovery Center, located in Columbia County School District’s Support Center, showcases two learning parks, JA Finance Park and JA BizTown, which will guide sixth and seventh graders through adult life simulations.

But it would not be just any school. This would be a faith-based learning environment for underserved children — a first-time opportunity for many of these families. So, with only two employees and ten children, Heritage Academy was born.
