    A young elephant seal was languishing on a beach in California with a plastic packing strip secured tightly around her neck, according to news. She was emaciated, likely because the plastic made it difficult to forage. It appeared to be killing her slowly. Rescuers carefully approached, sedated her, and cut the strip from her neck. Her scars will likely remain, but she survived — not all animals are so fortunate.

    Alaska’s Supreme Court has issued a ruling that may help protect bears and other wildlife in Alaska from being targeted in a fatal predator control program, according to Anchorage Daily News. After an attorney from Anchorage, Alaska sued the state on the grounds that its predator killing program negatively impacted her ability to watch the wildlife, her case was dismissed. Michelle Bittner then took her case to the Alaskan Supreme Court – which ruled that she did, in fact, have grounds to sue.

    Good news for sea turtles, dolphins, whales, and other marine animals: The United States will finally ban seafood imports from fisheries whose fishing practices result in fatal bycatch — thanks to pressure from several wildlife conservation groups, as announced by the groups in a press release. When fisheries trawl the seafloor – dragging gigantic nets across the bottom of the ocean in hopes of scooping up shrimp or other “seafood” – their nets kill indiscriminately.
