The Yankees put their leadoff batter on base in eight of the nine innings, creating constant pressure on the Reds. ExploreMeanwhile, the Reds’ traffic was like a dirt road in the backwoods, only five men reached base. That’s because they faced Max Fried, a left-handed wizard putting together a Cy Young season. When the Yankees have lost a game or two, Fried puts the plug in. In 10 starts after Yankee losses, Fried is 8-1.

And what he did was mind-rattling. He struck out the first five Yankees, the first five major league hitters he faced with 99 miles an hour fastballs and a disappearing-act slider. ExploreThe subplot to this was that the Cincinnati Reds beat the Yankees, 5-4, in 11 innings. It ended when pinch-hitter Gavin Lux, 2 for 23, drove a single to center field. The Reds have won 12 of their last 17 and are only 4 1/2 games behind the division-leading Chicago Cubs.

That was it for him and the Yankees as De La Cruz made certain the spotlight shined on him the rest of the night. De La Cruz produced three hits — a triple, a single and a home run as the Reds ripped the Yankees, 6-1, with De La Cruz delivering like an Amazon driver. All three De La Cruz hits produced runs, three RBI, and he scored twice as the Reds won for the 11th time in 16 games to creep to within 5 1/2 games of the division-leading Chicago Cubs.

ExploreAnd he did it just when the Reds needed it most, just as he always does. After losing the first two games of the series, with the threat of being swept for the first time this season, Abbott issued his personal gag order on the St. Louis Cardinals, pitching the Reds to a 4-1 victory, stopping a three-game losing streak. Abbott, a mad scientist on the mound, seldom hits more than 93 miles per hour on the radar gun, but hitters seldom make solid contact.

A: As a general rule, yes. A shortstop has to cover the most ground in the infield and he is in charge of the infield. A center fielder has to cover the most ground in the outfield and he is in charge of the outfield. That’s why so many shortstops are transferred to the outfield — Mickey Mantle, Robin Yount, Gary Sheffield, Miguel Cabrera and recently Oneil Cruz. They mostly stick the non-athletes at first base or guys slowing down at the end of their careers.
