Its walls are dazzled with strategically placed acoustic soundproofing, a turntable, seating for 20 and an impressive array of records spanning all sorts of genres. Jan’s Place is “a space where the acoustics are so good that you can sit and listen to music and have a conversation, both at normal volumes,” its website says. “Cozy, not loud.

The most obvious answer may be the doctor, which is why Riana Martinez, the creator and owner of Atascadero’s the Green Omen Apothecary was surprised when a woman came into her shop after leaving the urgent care next door. Unlike traditional biomedical centers loaded with prescriptions, Martinez’s shop is doused with personal care items, herbal teas, elixirs, metaphysical items and crystals.

Swift performed over 100 shows throughout her acclaimed Era’s Tour, with a setlist spanning 17 years and 10 albums worth of music. Midway through spring quarter every year, Cal Poly architecture freshmen and guests hike Poly Canyon Road with the materials necessary to create livable structures that they can inhabit for 48 hours out in Architecture Graveyard. This is part of the annual design competition called Design Village and is the biggest project of the year for many students. Along with the tiny, temporary city that students construct, there is food, music, games and more.

About 20 minutes driving on the 101 North from San Luis Obispo lies Traffic Records. It’s in the heart of Downtown Atascadero, a record store encapsulating all things music culture. There is a plethora of physical media ranging from CDs, cassettes and new and used vinyl records. Opened in 2018, Traffic Records is owned by Manuel Barba. Originally from Los Angeles, Barba is a mobile and radio DJ with an extensive background in event and concert coordination, according to the store’s website.

Emerging international artist Da’wan Gold doesn’t know exactly what first sparked his interest in music, as he was constantly surrounded by different creative influences in his childhood. His passion began when he was young, growing up with his mom playing old Betty White records as he wrote poetry to pass the time living on a rural farm in Georgia. He would write, go to school, come home and write more.
