The School of Dance Ballet Department is gearing up for its end-of-semester showcase. “Classique” premieres April 10 at the Marriott Center for Dance in the Hayes Christensen Theater. The program includes “The Kingdom of the Shades” movement from Act II of “La Bayadère,” coached by School of Dance faculty Maggie Wright Tesch and Justine Sheedy-Kramer. It also includes “Paquita,” coached by visiting répétiteurs Rex Tilton and Allison DeBona.

It’s beautiful to think how dynamic life is. Full of so many ups and downs, changes of direction and rises over challenges. This February 2025, Pioneer Theatre Company (PTC) presents “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,” chronicling the life and career of Grammy Awards winner and songwriting legend Carole King. PTC brings to life King’s song catalogue along with her music partners and friends Gerry Goffin, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil.

Celebrating the College of Fine Arts’ 75th year at the University of Utah, the School of Dance presents “Alchemy” at Kingsbury Hall April 19 and 20. “Alchemy” is a three piece program in collaboration between the School of Dance and three major dance companies based in the Salt Lake Valley: Ballet West, Repertory Dance Theatre, and Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company.

Attending a Broadway show is a costly affair for the audience member, but what about the costs of running the show? With rising production costs, theater payments and other fees, putting on a show is less about the “what about” than the “how to pay.”A Broadway show typically costs upwards of $10 million just to start up. Keeping the show running runs around $300,000-$600,000 per week. To maintain a show on Broadway, production companies aim to fill 1,000+ seats a night.

We have reached the final stretch of the school year, and for seniors it’s the last weeks of college until the next adventure begins. The University of Utah School of Dance presented “Outro,” A Modern Senior Concert. The concert showcased choreography from the nine Modern Dance BFA seniors and danced by themselves and other dancers from the School of Dance programs. The program also featured one new original work by Heartland Collective.
