EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - As the new Pope was announced Thursday afternoon, students and faculty were watching at Resurrection Catholic school in Evansville. The anticipation of the announcement was met with eyes glued to the screen until Pope Leo XIV emerged from the St. Peter’s Basilica. Joe Keith teaches eighth grade theology at the school. His class was in session as the 267th Pope of the Catholic church was announced. He started class as normal, as history was about to be made.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - It’s National Nurses Week, and 14 News is highlighting a special nursing program that many might not know about. SANE nurses are trained to examine victims of sexual assault. These nurses will collect evidence and offer support if victims wish to report the assault to police. SANE nurses also act as advocates and provide resources to keep sexual assault survivors healthy. They specialize in “trauma informed care,” so they know exactly how to interact with a person in crisis.

Bishop Siegel says the moments between the white smoke pouring from the Sistine Chapel and the moment Pope Leo emerged were filled with excitement and anticipation.

HENDERSON, Ky. (WFIE) - In Henderson, one mother is speaking out after her son was denied Medicaid services for autism therapy. Kayla Dunn says her son Lincoln is 9-years-old and has severe autism. Lincoln was diagnosed at the age of two, and his mother says they’ve been utilizing home and community based waivers, funded through Medicaid, to provide extensive therapy for him. “He’s been on it for about 6 years,” said Dunn.
