Sharon Matlin of Cape Coral found solace on her deck in her later years. However, Hurricane Ian in 2022 left her screen ripped and the cage broken, keeping her from enjoying the space for years. “I used to spend a lot of time sitting out there,” said Matlin. With the damage leaving her pool area open to the elements, unexpected visitors began to appear. “Ducks swimming in the pool, and birds would be in here,” said Matlin.

A Sanibel woman is finding herself living alongside an unexpected new neighbor—a crocodile. The reptile has made itself comfortable in her backyard, laying eggs just feet from her home. Carolyn David, the homeowner, has lived in her house for decades but never imagined she’d be sharing her space with such a scaly creature. “There are only like two crocodiles on the island. I had heard that they were here, but it was just a few weeks ago that I saw that there was one here,” said David.

A charter captain, who became internet infamous after a video of a heated argument went viral, has been released from jail. Brock Horner, 40, was arrested Friday night near Port Charlotte. He faced charges of burglary with assault or battery after jumping onto another man’s boat during a shouting match on the water.

Long before Sanibel Island had a causeway and 911 service, first responders were already working to keep the community safe. Those who served in the early days gathered to share their stories and reflect on their experiences. “You had to ride the ferry to school. Got to school a little bit late,” said Raymond Rhodes, the first patrolman on Sanibel. Rhodes and his brother-in-law, Richard Noon, were part of the Sanibel Police Department in the 1970s. Rhodes was hired as the first patrolman in 1975.
