Keywords: Tropics; Gravity waves; Inertia-gravity waves; Reanalysis data; Atmospheric waves; Wave properties1. IntroductionGravity waves with a wide range of space and time scales are clearly discernible in the vertical velocity, horizontal wind, geopotential, and temperature fields in today’s high-resolution global analyses. The upward transport of mechanical energy and momentum by gravity waves plays an important role in the dynamics of the middle atmosphere (Fritts and Alexander 2003).
