I’m ready for the All Blacks’ season to start. Super Rugby Pacific is surely all over, bar the shouting. If the Chiefs don’t win, that’ll represent a monumental failure. As I look at the All Blacks, the first order of business ought to be the captaincy. It won’t be, obviously, because for all New Zealand Rugby’s huffing and puffing about diversity, they actually don’t have the stones to make Ardie Savea skipper. I’m not sure what it is that dissuades them. Perhaps Savea’s too much his own man.

mens super-rugby-pacific Copied to clipboard 0 You can’t dream it, if you can’t see it. With all due respect to Moana Pasifika, I doubt many aspiring professional rugby players have dreamed of pulling on their jersey. Until now, that is. The merit of having Moana Pasifika and the Fijian Drua in Super Rugby Pacific has never been in dispute. At least from my point of view.

The growth that rugby in New Zealand seeks won’t come from the women’s game. At least not for a decade or two. First XV schoolgirls’ rugby remains in its infancy, but will flourish over time. It’s at that point where we will see women’s rugby not only pay its way, but become a genuine revenue generator. So far, it seems that it’s individual schools, driven by the increasing demand of pupils, who are driving the development of the game at that level.

I wholeheartedly agree with Ken Laban. The veteran television commentator cast doubt upon the Crusaders’ Super Rugby Pacific title-winning credentials due to the absence of an accomplished playmaker. They team had one in recent years, in Richie Mo’unga, but don’t boast anyone of his quality now. Saturday’s clash between the Crusaders and Chiefs left me a bit flat. Nothing wrong with the game itself, especially the Chiefs’ contribution.

It’s heartening to hear that New Zealand Rugby chairman David Kirk is committed to attending board meetings in person. How selfless. Kirk, the 1987 Rugby World Cup-winning captain, doesn’t live in New Zealand. You might think that was a prerequisite for such a role, but apparently not. I wouldn’t normally care, given board meetings aren’t my primary interest in rugby.

John Plumtree says Nehe Milner-Skudder (shoulder) will hopefully be fit by week 3 or 4 of the Super season. That puts us in the March 1-9 bracket. Injury to be reassessed in January, then six to eight weeks rehab
