Moray Sports Centre was the venue, on Saturday afternoon, for the culmination of the Galbraith Highlands Tennis 8s league. Two events were held with four teams involved in the knockout for the league title, and six taking part in the fight for the District Plaque which was open to those who were not part of the semi-finals. The top two from the Highland section and from Moray won through to compete for the league trophy.

TENNIS in Moray was again disrupted by adverse weather - but action took place across five categories at the end of May. Call offs are providing major headaches for club organisers, some of whom have little scope for rearrangement. Whatever their individual situations, fixtures must be played within 14 days of the original scheduled date. Women’s LeaguesRothes B managed to win their first three-pointer of the season when they defeated Rothiemurchus C 6-4.

In the Highlands tennis league, Elgin lead the way in Mixed Division 1, and at this stage in the season, look set to retain the title. The team is undefeated after four matches and have opened up a four-point gap. The latest victory has effectively ended the challenge from the Aviemore team. Also in Division 1 Rothes succumbed to their Inverness visitors. A little but of luck could have earned the Speysiders a share of the points.

The Galbraith Highland leagues moved into its second week with Moray clubs heavily involved in the action. Aberlour made a welcome comeback to the Highland League fold, entering the ladies fourth division. Following their hard fought draw at Gordonstoun in round one, they played host to the Kingussie seconds. It was a closely fought affair with the Badenoch women scraping it 5-4. The turning point in the match came in the 1v1 rubber.

WITH two games left to play, Elgin A cannot be caught in the race for the Division 1 mixed title of the Galbraith Highlands Tennis Leagues, writes Hamish McBain. There was some doubt as to whether the team would retain the trophy as Nairn A were within touching distance. However, Monday evening’s win at Rothes combined with the Duff Avenue second string holding title challengers Nairn to a draw meant a successful season for the A team.
