“I’m writing a book!” The guy at my library event pulled me aside to divulge his happy secret. He was so proud of himself, and excited. Wonderful! I said. What kind of book? It’s a mystery, he said. Or maybe it’s a thriller. Or maybe it’s a novel of suspense. He looked at me, perplexed. What’s the difference? BIG DIFFERENCE. A mystery is: Whodunnit? Are you doing all you possibly can to make your book be the best it can be? What if there was a way to make it SO much better–to get the scoop on publishing, an insider’s appraisal of your pages, and guidance from some of  the  savviest people in the industry? What if we added a weekend in a gorgeous mansion, voluptuous food, and the camaraderie and support from other writers? Still no?

When we were little kids, if we were lucky, someone would put us on their laps and say the magic words: once upon a time. The walls would fall away, time would vanish, and we’d be transported to a new world. But I think we were also being introduced to the structure of a story. There’d be the character you cared about — a warrior princess, a despotic king, a rabbit who could talk — with a high- stakes problem that needed to be solved.
