There’s a moment on “bluffing in the snow,” the first track on André 3000’s new surprise-released solo piano EP, where you can hear the artist thinking. For roughly the first half of the three-minute piece, he tries out different ideas—a rigid eighth-note rhythm; a billowy chord progression—without committing to any one direction. Then, around the 1:25 mark, he hits on a head-nodding pattern, with low and high registers standing in for kick drum and snare.
