Wildfires are continuing to burn across central and western Canada, with no signs of letting up. Two people have died, and more than 30,000 people have now been evacuated across Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. Many of these people are from remote First Nations communities — with limited escape routes. Smoke from the fires has caused air quality alerts in the United States and hazy skies that reached as far as Europe.

Wildfires burning in central and western Canada forced widespread evacuations last week, with more than 17,000 people moved in Manitoba alone. About 7,700 square miles have burned so far, making it one of the worst starts to a Canadian fire season in years; it’s second only to the start of 2023, which became the worst wildfire season in Canada’s recorded history. Many of the people being evacuated are from First Nations, in remote communities accessible only by single roads, boat or air.

Demand for electricity is surging globally — and it’s projected to grow even more as society shifts away from gas-powered cars and heating to electric systems, and as intensifying heat waves drive the need for more air conditioning.

I went to the rainiest city in Europe to see how they're adapting to climate change - so, naturally, it didn't rain once! In my latest for @TheWorld I take you to Bergen, where the city is upgrading its stormwater system using nature instead of concrete: https://t.co/jKZQEavAS5

It’s official – I’m at sea! I’ve joined scientists studying deep water currents in the AMOC. They're researching how they work, what's changing, and what that means for our climate. I’m pitching stories on the science, the people, and life at sea – give me a shout! #AMOC https://t.co/meAoera5Gj
