Les paysages glacés et reculés de l’Antarctique sont de plus en plus pollués mais aussi exposés à des espèces étrangères dérivant jusqu’à ce bout du monde via des débris océaniques flottants. Conscients de cette menace qui pèse sur ce littoral isolé et les écosystèmes marins uniques de l’Antarctique, nous avons voulu savoir d’où venaient tous ces débris. Il s’avère qu’ils voyagent plus loin qu’on ne le pense.

By 2050, one in every three young people on earth will be of African origin, according to the 2024 International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) Global Employment Trends for Youth report. Africa’s young people will be key players in the direction of future global consumption, culture and even stability. It’s estimated that by 2050, about 72.6 million new jobs for sub-Saharan Africa’s young people will be needed. The ILO report warns of an African “youthquake” unless the continent creates new jobs.

Previously, rafts reaching Antarctic waters have been genetically tested to reveal their source location. These analyses confirmed kelp could drift from sub-Antarctic islands including South Georgia and the Kerguelen Islands. But not all objects can be tested this way, and only a small fraction of the Antarctic coastline is visited by scientists each year. Scaling up such an approach to determine all possible source locations is not feasible. Instead, we turned to ocean modelling.

Nettleton’s first Charity Tractor Run has been a resounding success, raising more than £2,700 for St John the Baptist Church in the village. Spearheaded by local residents, Ian and Ruth Dawson and Jackie and Quintin Parker, the event united people from across the local area for a day of fundraising and enjoying the local countryside.
