    DES MOINES, Iowa — 2024 was quite a year for weather. Des Moines broke several records throughout the year, and some of them helped 2024 get on the top five list of warmest years ever for the city. Looking at the list, 2024 officially comes in as the second warmest year on record with an average temperature of 54.9°. 2012 still holds the record for warmest year ever with an average temperature of 56.0°. Des Moines usually sees a yearly average temperature close to 50.8 degrees.

We started off with back-to-back blizzards in January, had the coldest Caucus ever and we recently went through the sixth driest September on record!  We are slowly nearing the winter season, and with how unusual the weather has been this year, it's easy to wonder if that trend will continue.
