On August 12th at 8:34 am, Paws, Monochrome, and I touched the monument marking the northern terminus of the Pacific Crest Trail. After 144 days of walking north, I was done. Tears welled up in my eyes but didn’t fall down my face. I felt empty and ecstatic. I felt nothing and everything—relief to be done, and sadness that it was over. Washington was my favorite section; the dark green pine tree forests and huge volcanic mountains made every day feel like a true adventure.

As the heat of summer in Northern California lingered over me, the grass and trees I was hiking through dried out and the snow melt quickly disappeared into dry water sources. The excitement of crossing my first state line after 1,700 miles excited me as I continued hiking north but the early start of wild fire season gave me pause: what was the rest of my thru hike going to look like? I knew there was a fire ahead of me, already closing over 60 miles of trail.

After leaving the Sierra Nevada mountains, it is known that many thru hikers struggle with the “NorCal Blues.” A time on trail when you still have months of hiking to go, where you have left the most beautiful mountains and entered the green tunnel, where the mental game to keep putting one foot in front of the other gets harder with every step. On day 99 of my thru hike, I sat at camp discussing with two other hikers what our favorite parts of trail have been.

On day 54 of my thru hike I left the desert section and began the ascent into the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The terrain slowly changed from the barren landscape I had been hiking through for the last 700 miles to a rocky forest trail until finally I reached the first patch of the snow. The first couple days of the Sierra section had a lot less snow than I had expected. But soon we reached the base of Mount Whitney, the first true snow adventure.
