Texas lawmakers have increased funding for pregnancy centers, adoption agencies, and maternity homes to $200 million this year and passed legislation that ensures the funding won’t be used for abortions. Texas Right to Life reported in a June 17 news release that the funds help the Thriving Texas Families program equip pro-life ministries and nonprofits to provide support for women and their children, born and unborn.

Nearly half of US adults say they have some connection to Catholicism, such as having grown up in a Catholic household or currently being Catholic, a June 16 Pew Research Center study found. Of the 47% of the more than 9,500 who took the survey, 20% say they are Catholic; 9% say they are cultural Catholics; 9% identify as formerly Catholic; and 9% are connected in other ways, such as having a Catholic parent or spouse.

The Diocese of Buffalo, New York, has responded to Catholics who object to its request that their parishes help fund its $150 million settlement with survivors of clergy sex abuse. According to its news release, the diocese has asked its parishes to cover $80 million of the settlement using unrestricted cash and investments, which excludes prepaid tuition, Mass offerings and donor-restricted gifts.

Americans are becoming more likely to say that religion is increasing its influence on society, according to a May Gallup poll that found a 14-point spike since May 2024. Gallup found that in May 2024, only 20% of Americans said religion is increasing its influence on society, while 34% said the same in May 2025. Gallup also noted that in between the two readings, in December 2024, 35% of Americans had said religion’s influence is growing.

Several Orthodox churches and an Orthodox priest filed a federal lawsuit June 16 in an attempt to stop a Washington state law that will require priests, starting July 27, to report child abuse if a penitent revealed it to them in confession.
