A recent consultation reminded me of a series of patients that I saw as a GP registrar that baffled me at the time. These patients seemed to ‘attract’ bad luck, and it felt as though no matter how hard they tried to change their lives for the better something would happen to set them back at every attempt. Back then, I didn’t quite believe everything about their stories, as it seemed bizarre that each patient could have experienced unkindness from so many other people.

I recently read an article with the statistic ‘1 in 3 victims of domestic abuse are men’. It sets off my skeptic radar every time I see it or the related ‘1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men experienc[e] domestic abuse in their lifetime’.1 These statistics just don’t resonate with my real-life experience in the consulting room. Maybe all the men are not presenting to health care, or they are seeing my male colleagues? After some research, it turns out that it is a bit more complicated than that.
