Gatineau Hills youth hockey players – here’s your chance to “gear up” for free. Organized by the Paugan Falls Rapids hockey team and Next Shift Hockey, the “Gear up for glory” event on the Heritage Hall lawn in Low on July 6 will provide new or lightly used hockey equipment for free to youth aged three to 18.

A year after a large wind storm tore through the region, the city continues to clean up the mess it left behind. Meteorologists dubbed it a derecho, the Spanish word for “straight.” More common to the U.S. Midwest, a derecho is a group of fast-moving thunderstorms that spans a great distance. Unlike tornadoes with their twisting winds, derechoes move in straight lines. The storm struck southeastern Ontario and southwestern Quebec on May 21.

Farm Point resident Tineke Kuijper said her retirement plans are in jeopardy because of an incoming Chelsea bylaw. The recently retired resident bought a house in Chelsea to eventually rent out rooms through Airbnb, a vacation rental company. Kuijper said she felt dejected when municipal council voted unanimously to pass a draft bylaw during the Jan. 10 council meeting to restrict short-term rentals (STR) licenses to five residences per ward – 30 for all of Chelsea per year.
