Skip to Content April 17, 2025 Former Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl will be honored with a sign reading “Elizabeth Tisdahl Way” on McDaniel Avenue after a unanimous vote from City Council on Monday. Tisdahl, who served as mayor from 2009 to 2017, was also on the Evanston Township High School District 202 Board of Education and represented the 7th Ward on City Council. She was present at Monday’s meeting, along with former Mayor James Lytle.

Mayor Daniel Biss will appoint Cat Vielma to the Land Use Commission, rather than reappointing George Halik, according to an email from Biss to city staff Friday shared with The Daily. The appointment has been met with criticism from some residents. In his email to staff, Biss acknowledged he received an “unusual amount of public input” from residents as Halik’s term expired.

City officials and local organizers gathered to dedicate the newly-opened Lorraine H. Morton City Hall on Monday morning. The city completed its move to the building April 1, and the first City Council meeting will be held in the building April 14. The dedication’s audience included current and former councilmembers, city staff and representatives from downtown community organizations. Third Ward Councilmember-elect Shawn Iles and 8th Ward Councilmember-elect Matt Rodgers also attended.

Evanston may see three new councilmembers after Tuesday’s elections, based on preliminary results from the Cook County Clerk’s office. With Ald. Juan Geracaris (9th) running unopposed, eight seats were up for a vote April 1. Official election results are not yet available. According to data from the clerk’s office shared by the Evanston RoundTable, about 10,000 mail-in ballots were issued in Evanston, and 4,324 were returned by April 1.
