The University of Cincinnati College of Arts and Sciences is gearing up for the second annual Sustainability@UC Week to take place Jan. 27th through Feb. 1st. With a week full of events and activities, students, researchers, educators, staff, and the public are invited to participate and get involved in sustainability at UC. The first Sustainability@UC Week was organized by The Center for Public Engagement with Science (PEWS) in January 2024.

1.To make the pastry, place the flour and butter in a food processor and blitz until it resembles breadcrumbs. Add the icing sugar with a pinch of salt and pulse until combined. Add in the egg yolk with 2-3 tbsp cold water and pulse to bring the mixture together. This makes enough dough for 4 cases - you can bake the tarts then store in an airtight container for a week or freeze them for another occasion.

1. Place the strawberries in a food processor and blitz to roughly chop. 2.Add in the remaining ingredients (except the desiccated coconut) and blend to a thick paste. 3.Taste the mixture, adding in an extra date for sweetness if required or a little maple syrup. 4. Chill the mixture for 20 minutes to firm up, then shape into balls. 5.Roll in desiccated coconut if using. 6.Store in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days or freeze.

For children and teenagers in Calvert County, substance use and mental health are big health concerns. The 2023-2025 CalvertHealth Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) and the 2024 Calvert County Family Network (CCFN) Community Assessment for Child Well-Being highlight the importance of more resources and support in these areas. Through these reports, its shown that many young people in Calvert are experiencing mental health issues like anxiety, depression, and stress.

Local farms give us more than just produce; they are the backbone of southern Maryland. Forrest Hall Farm and Serenity Farm are two farms with strong roots and a big impact on the community. Forrest Hall Farm began as a tobacco farm.

Friends of Linda L. Kelly Animal Shelter (FOLLKAS), and Just One More Dachshund Rescue (JOMDR) teamed up with SMASH K9 to host a Small Business Saturday Open House. This first-time event raised over $2,500 for needy animals and united the community to support a good cause. The event had pet photos with Santa, booths from local businesses, and delicious food.

The Arts Council of Calvert County recently hosted an Artist Market for Small Business Saturday. Local artists set up booths at the CalvArt gallery to showcase and sell their work. Events like the Artist Market provide a space for artists to connect with the community and share their work but also inspire everyone to appreciate the creativity in the area. Cindy Herndon was one of the featured artists at the Artist Market and showed visitors how to make a wooded scene with red maples.
