Two women were arrested and face numerous charges in an animal cruelty investigation launched after dozens of horses were found dead on several San Joaquin County properties. Jan Johnson and Justine Fitzhenry, both of Clements, were arrested Wednesday by the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office. Johnson is charged with 23 felony counts and 18 misdemeanor counts.

A walnut silo at the Diamond Foods processing facility in Stockton caught fire early Thursday, officials said. Fire crews initially responded Tuesday to the facility at Diamond and East Worth streets, according to Toby Trana, a battalion chief with the Stockton Fire Department. The walnuts were smoldering and facility staff began off-loading them from the silo, Trana said. However, staff experienced mechanical issues and weren’t able to remove the walnuts quickly enough.

Joseph Smith, former executive director of First Tee of San Joaquin, was arraigned this week on six counts of embezzlement and forgery, the San Joaquin County District Attorney's Office announced. Smith, who was fired by First Tee of San Joaquin in early 2025, is accused of one count of embezzlement, one count of embezzlement of more than $950, and four counts of forgery. He is accused of embezzling $90,000, according to the criminal complaint.
