1 Introduction Despite its microscopic size, planktonic organisms play a crucial role in maintaining the delicate balance of Earth's ecosystems. Both phytoplankton and zooplankton form the foundation of marine food webs, thus serving as primary food sources for countless marine species. In particular, phytoplankton significantly contributes to global oxygen production through photosynthesis,[1] playing a critical role in regulating the planet's atmospheric content.
