    1 Introduction The Lennard-Jones (LJ) potential describes the pairwise repulsive and attractive forces with a relatively simple and mathematically tractable expression. It bears the name of the mathematician-physicist-chemist Sir John Lennard-Jones, Figure 1. Today, it is the most popular building block in molecular modeling and simulation. This contribution describes two episodes from the history of the LJ potential.
