    Rapid Response: Dear Editor, Waters reports on important considerations for the planned expansion of medical school places and medical apprenticeships [1]. Without adequate expansion of specialty training and consultant posts to facilitate supervision and teaching, problems already shared by the current workforce will be heightened for all involved. Current levels of dissatisfaction and burn out are high, leading to many doctors reducing hours or leaving the NHS [2].

    Dear Editor, Finn and colleagues [1] highlight some of the ‘unintended consequences’ that the proposed trial of shortening medical degrees might have, including concerns about negative impacts upon access to medicine, increasing degree attrition rates and impacting the global recognition of the UK medical degree. Of particular concern is the issue of ‘paradoxically rising unemployment’.

The closing remarks from Dr Katie Bramall-Stainer (BMA GP Committee Chair) emphasise the point that many barriers to providing continuity of care relate to the need for significant investment into primary care resources, alongside increased numbers of GPs and other healthcare professionals.
