There are fewer kids in classrooms across the Bay Area and California. Regional and statewide school enrollment numbers continue to drop, though less precipitously than during the first years of the pandemic, according to data released Wednesday by the California Department of Education. The state now has 5.8 million TK-12 students enrolled, down nearly 7% from the 6.2 million the state had a decade ago.

San Jose, once the nation’s 10th largest city before falling to the 13th spot, is clawing its way up the rankings of the most populous cities in the United States. The self-proclaimed “capital of Silicon Valley” — now creeping back toward a million residents — is officially the nation’s 12th largest city, according to new data from the U.S. Census Bureau. “It’s good to be growing again,” said Mayor Matt Mahan when he heard the news.

Marisol Mondragon was in a rented Home Depot truck moving her belongings to a new home in San Jose when she, her son and a family friend found themselves surrounded by police with guns pointed at them in what resembled a scene from a movie, she said. A helicopter circled overhead, she said. “There were 15 police officers pointing guns at us, like we had killed someone or something,” Mondragon, 50, said in an interview.
