A few days ago, for the first time in my life, the CBC opened its airwaves to its critics, and I got to complain. It happened in the unlikeliest of places, on a CBC radio show called Commotion, which the national public broadcaster describes as a place for “vibrant conversations” about “all things pop culture.”The panel conversation, titled “Three Critics on the Future of the CBC,” was timely.

Late last Friday night at some ungodly hour, a gaggle of business casual conservatives stumbled out of Ottawa’s Byward Market and voiced their frustrations in the direction of Parliament Hill. “F— Trudeau!” “Axe the tax!” they were heard yelling into the cold spring night. They repeated these lines over and over again. Their chants stood in stark contrast to a speech thoughtfully delivered that same week by former long-time Harper cabinet minister Jason Kenney.

According to new data collected by The Hub, there could now be as few as 60 full-time Canadian foreign correspondents left abroad from major outlets, with 45 of them working with the CBC. There appears to be no permanent Canadian correspondents based in the Middle East, Russia, or mainland China. Vanishing foreign bureaus are a result of shrinking budgets and authoritarian regime pushback, but may also be a reaction to a country that has a shrinking footprint on the world stage.

In 2015, newly minted Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declared Canada was finally “back” on the world stage. But many argue that in the last decade, Canada’s international voice has only continued to weaken, and today is little more than a whisper. We do not wield the same authority or command the same respect as we did generations ago.

This Sunday morning, at the crack of dawn, I will put on an itchy tan dress shirt covered in small colourful badges, walk up the icy hill to our local church in West Toronto, and continue a nearly 100-year-old tradition of leading a parade of eight to ten-year-olds. Boys will stand proudly holding flags adorned with a maple leaf, a beaver, the Union Jack, and a fleur-de-lis. They will be careful not to let the flags touch the ground. They will walk in unison, ensuring their shirts stay tucked in.
