    An ancient oak felled in a north London park by Toby Carvery's owners was classified last year as a "fine specimen" with a life expectancy of at least 50 years, planning documents show. Pub chain Mitchells & Butlers admitted on Tuesday it was responsible for chopping down the 500-year-old tree "to protect our employees and guests as well as the wider general public".

    The cutting down of an ancient oak in north London was ordered on health and safety grounds by the pub chain that owns Toby Carvery after it was told the tree was dead. The felled oak, estimated to be about 500 years old, was found by council workers at the edge of Whitewebbs Park in Enfield earlier in April. An emergency tree preservation order has now been imposed on what remains of the tree, which is near a Toby Carvery.

    A mother who murdered her two young sons in the bath in east London has been sentenced to life imprisonment in what police have described as "an incredibly tragic case". Kara Alexander, 47, of Dagenham, was found guilty of killing Elijah Thomas, two, and Marley Thomas, five, at their home in Cornwallis Road in December 2022. At Kingston Crown Court on Friday, Mr Justice Bennathan sentenced Alexander to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years and 252 days.
