I hate to be predictable. It’s a good way to lose people’s attention. But there are two column subjects you know I’m going to write about every year – Christmas and Easter. A look at the calendar tells me it’s time for the Easter column. Disclaimer: The first part of what follows is discussion of Christian belief and tradition. I am a Christian. If you are not, I’m sorry. I’ve said before that Easter is the most important day of the year for Christians.

Another column about the Grand Prix? Darn right. This is important stuff. Let’s look at the numbers. 50 years. More than 30 columns. 200,000 people. $100 million impact. Three days. 200 miles per hour. It’s pretty amazing how many people I’ve talked to recently say that they were at the first Grand Prix of Long Beach in 1975. Apparently, I have been talking to some pretty old people. Wait, those people are my friends and peers – the same age as I am. Ah well.

You’ve no doubt heard by now that the Long Beach Grand Prix is celebrating its golden anniversary this year. The first race took place on Sept. 28, 1975 — it was a Formula 5000 race designed to prove the city could put together a Formula One (F1) race. F1 is and was the pinnacle of road racing.

They’re back. Or at least they are supposed to be back. I have to admit that I haven’t visited the Belmont Shore beach in the dark of night so far this season to check. I’m talking, of course, about the grunion. That’s a fish locally world famous in these parts. A grunion looks a lot like a big sardine – or a smelt according to the ichthyologists (fish experts). It has an extremely unusual, maybe even unique way of spawning. Spawning is sex to you and me.
