Born in 1857, Maye Russell Cooke was a dedicated advocate for women's rights long before marrying solicitor William Russell Cooke in 1891. As detailed in last year’s article 'In the footsteps of Maye Russell Cooke', among her many feats, she served as treasurer of the Central National Society for Women’s Suffrage, published Women’s Suffrage in 1885 and was elected to the London School Board for Lambeth in 1888, where she championed free education.
