Exploring a Scottish myth. It’s April 2007, and in a quiet corner of the internet, a video is uploaded to YouTube, a site still in its infancy. In its shaky, pixelated images we see a man with an oil-blackened face lying prone on the ground in blue workwear overalls. ‘Where’s the rat?’, the cameraman asks, and as if on cue, the man picks up a dead-looking rodent before placing it carefully between his teeth. This, we are told, is the legendary Catman of Greenock.

Hanging out with some punks. Some months back, during one of those late summer boons that can lead to long, impromptu walks to nowhere in particular, I found myself roaming the Grand Union Canal. Starting at the vast lifestyle shopping mall that is Coal Drops Yard and heading west, we almost forgot what was ahead. Without warning, the canal burst into life, revealing a throng of bare chests and Bluetooth speakers.

Making a swift 180 down the aisle. I am generally against personal essays. I think they are undignified. Which is unfortunate for me, because when you get divorced, as I have just done, all anyone wants to know is what happened. I am not that young – but I am young to be divorced. My advice for anyone who feels self-conscious about their age would simply be: don’t get botox, get divorced. What happened was this. On the day itself, I put the wedding dress on first before getting the creases out.
