A Massachusetts-based renewable energy company with a facility in Longview announced Monday a deal with all Fred Meyer stores in Washington and Oregon to turn food waste into energy and lessen the amount of unsold food sent to landfills. Divert — which operates a 66,000-square-foot plant in Longview — takes in food waste from stores across the country, and converts the discarded nutriments into fuel instead of letting the waste rot in landfills to turn into methane, a greenhouse gas.

Port of Woodland commissioners have selected a new candidate after the sudden death of port commissioner Paul Cline. Cline, 73, died April 23, according to Port of Woodland press release. Commissioners Rob Rich and Bob Wile selected Pat Canfield, of Ariel, after three candidates were interviewed during a special meeting on Tuesday. Candidates for the District 3 positions had to be residents of southeast Cowlitz County and communities in the area of Ariel, Yale and Cougar.
