Alaska has a Writer Laureate rather than a Poet Laureate and Heather, who has just finished a term in that role, is mostly a prose writer. “But I admire poetry,” she says, “the brevity and emotion of it, and I read it every morning to begin my day.” Heather prefers informal interviews to writing down her opinion.

The Sun Does ShineBy Anthony Ray HintonAnthony Hinton loved his mama more than anything in the world. He loved church, his best friend Lester, southern food and Alabama. His life was simple. In 1985, at 29, Hinton was cutting his mama’s lawn and was confronted by two deputies. What began as a few questions led to Hinton being arrested for two counts of capital murder and one attempted murder. Police discovered an old gun that had not been fired in 25 years in his mama’s home.

Former Mayor and teacher Stephanie Scott, 75, died peacefully from brain cancer Feb. 23 in Port Townsend, Washington surrounded by old friends and her children Reed, Heron and Joshua, who was her primary caregiver. There will be a celebration of her life in Haines this June. "The pinnacle of my life was becoming and being a parent. I didn't plan it. I didn't aspire to it. But it was the best time of my life, " Scott told the Chilkat Valley News in 2012 after being elected Mayor.
