A Better Tent City is marking a big milestone in Waterloo Region. The tiny home community, an alternative for those living on the street, first opened its doors in 2020. A Better Tent City got its start at Lot 42, the former event space, and then temporarily moved to Battler Road. In 2021, the tiny homes were set up at their current location – Ardelt Avenue.

A family in Waterloo, Ont. says a severe cockroach infestation in their apartment has left them traumatized. Zahir Stanikzai, his mother, his wife and their six kids have lived in the Glenelm Crescent apartment for just over a year. Stanikzai said the pest problems began a few months after they first moved in and they’ve now taken over his unit, especially when the sun goes down. “There is a lot. Thousands, hundreds of cockroaches,” he explained.

People living in Ingersoll and the surrounding area say they are worried and disappointed following an announcement the GM CAMI Assembly plant will be temporarily shutting down. The plant has been a major staple of the community since it opened in 1989 and employs approximately 1,200 people. The two million square foot facility is considered to be one of the area’s largest employers. Layoffs are expected as early as Monday.

Geovanny Villalba-Aleman will serve more time in prison for stabbing three people at the University of Waterloo. In March, a judge sentenced him to 11 years behind bars for the 2023 attack. Villalba-Aleman admitted he went into a gender studies class and stabbed two students and a professor. He pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated assault, one count of assault causing bodily harm and one count of assault with a weapon.

Waterloo Region’s business community is reacting to the province’s plan to give businesses a six-month deferral on some taxes. The provincial government announced the plan this morning in a bid to soften the blow of U.S President Donald Trump’s tariffs. Select provincially-administered taxes, including the Beer Wine and Spirits Tax and Gasoline Tax, will be deferred retroactively from April 1, 2025, to Oct. 1, 2025.
