It’s frustrating for Rosie Harris to go to the two stores in Nain and be unable to buy essential items like toilet paper, baby wipes, cleaning supplies, ketchup, or rice, due to the Kamutik W ferry being unable to deliver to the Inuit community on Labrador’s north coast. Harris has four young children at home who are picky eaters, and without staple foods they eat, the mother has had a hard time cooking enough food they enjoy.

Residents of Churchill Falls are watching and waiting as water bombers and helicopters continue to battle a fire located one kilometre from the town that houses employees for a large Hydroelectric Station. The fire started in the evening of Wednesday, May 28. The source of the fire is not confirmed by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador at this time. Two of the province’s water bombers fought the fire Wednesday until it became too dark; they were set to resume early Thursday morning.

Innu students heading into Kindergarten will now have the ability to be fully immersed in their own language, following years of work since Innu reclaimed jurisdiction over education in 2009. “There’s a lot of English everywhere, so we don’t need that,” said Francesca Snow, a retired teacher and the curriculum developer with Mamu Tshishkutamashutau Innu Education (MTIE).

Bell Canada’s cancellation of a $32-million dollar contract to expand high-speed internet and cell service on Labrador’s north coast comes as the telecommunications giant has confirmed plans to expand southward in the United States. After receiving millions in government subsidies for the Labrador North Wireless Broadband Project, Canada’s largest communications company says it’s no longer feasible to complete the expansion due to rising costs and competition.
