About 300 mental health workers at Kaiser Permanente in San Diego are returning to work this week after approving a new four-year contract that ends what the National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW) calls the longest mental health strike in U.S. history. The agreement follows nearly seven months of picketing, a hunger strike and a public call from Gov. Gavin Newsom urging both sides to resolve the dispute.

After more than six months on strike, about 300 mental health workers at Kaiser Permanente in San Diego may soon be back on the job. The National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW) has reached a tentative agreement with Kaiser after the 196-day strike. It was the longest mental health strike in California history according to the union. The strike began in October, with union members demanding more time for patient tasks and better pay.

When Annette Culver first met her therapist at Father Joe’s Villages, she gave him just 15 minutes. “I was very defiant, just waiting for him to make a wrong move. And I stayed the whole time, you know, the whole the whole hour talking to him,” she said. Those 15 minutes turned into a couple of years of regular therapy sessions. Culver is diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, depression and extreme paranoia.

Medi-Cal—California’s Medicaid program — covers nearly half of all Latinos in the state. In San Diego County, 44% of Latinos rely on it for doctor visits, prescriptions and emergency care. But proposed federal changes could put that coverage at risk. House Republicans are considering $2.3 trillion in Medicaid cuts as part of a broader deficit reduction plan. One element includes imposing work requirements for eligibility.

Harvey and Marion Yurow depend on a local senior ride-share program to get to medical appointments. But the program is struggling to recruit volunteer drivers. My latest for @KPBS - https://t.co/Zy9Hve6RUX via @YouTube

For Susan Castro, Ralph, a scruffy 6-year-old Norfolk Terrier, is more than just a pet. He's a steadfast friend, a source of comfort and a guardian. Data shows homeless women are at an increased risk of violence and harassment. My latest for @kpbs: https://t.co/IoZZYhTCGm

For my latest feature for @KPBS, I spent time with a team of San Diego County public health nurses and @calfiresandiego firefighters as they drove through dusty unpaved roads to support residents in the county's most rural areas - https://t.co/nT8L5BtDQb
