Just like a chef plates his food to be more visually enticing, you have to “plate” your words so your reader doesn’t go, “Holy moly this paragraph is a page long. Skip.”As writers, we want our readers to lovingly celebrate each and every word we’ve carefully placed on the page — even the articles.

My parents always encouraged me to be myself. Still, I somehow picked up the belief that there's a "right" way and a "wrong" way to do life and that the right way means doing things in a certain order. I believed that your early 20s were the only time it was perfectly acceptable (and perhaps even adorable) to be a hot mess, while your late 20s were for taking the first steps toward getting "old and boring" — getting married, getting serious about a career, the whole nine yards.

Comedy and satire by women and marginalized genders, for everyone. Follow publicationWhen it comes to playing (and winning) the numbers game, more doesn’t always mean better. The numbers game is legit. Writers inherently get a lot of rejection, and both writing and submitting a lot is the best way to counteract this. But the numbers game only goes so far. There’s one thing that could be sabotaging your success rate that has nothing to do with how much you submit — and it’s totally in your control.
