LAWRENCE, Kan. (KCTV) - A former Lawrence elementary school speech pathologist is ordered to stand trial after allegedly sexually abusing a child at the school. A psychologist deemed Mark E. Gridley, 61, competent to stand trial and aid in his own defense according to online court records from a hearing on May 8. Gridley is charged with one count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child under the age of 14. He is also charged with one count of kidnapping.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A Kansas City firefighter who hit and killed three people in Westport may get a settlement worth nearly $1 million from the city. City council members are expected to consider approving $915,000 settlements in lawsuits filed by the firefighter’s union and Dominic Biscari over workers’ comp benefits during a meeting Thursday afternoon. Biscari filed for the benefit after he was injured in the 2021 crash.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A former Johnson County employee will be allowed to use the internet leading up to his trial even though he is accused of preying on children while online. A Johnson County judge granted Christopher Wehunt’s request during a court hearing May 6. Wehunt is required to have software to monitor his online access according to online court records. Wehunt is charged with three counts of sexually exploiting a child.

LEXINGTON, Mo. (KCTV) - A gas main was not marked as it should have been according to a preliminary investigation into how a Lexington house exploded last month. The National Transportation Safety Board released the preliminary findings on Monday, May 5. The NTSB found workers with Alfra Construction drilled into the unmarked section of a capped underground gas main in a residential neighborhood on April 9. The workers were installing a fiber optic line for Sellenriek Construction at the time.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (KCTV) - Lawrence is taking steps to regulate the people it helps while making sure the right people recieve the limited resources available. Lawrence announced it made changes to its homeless policy. It specifically impacts people without permanent housing that come from other communities. The Homeless Response Team said the changes will help with consistency and accountability when someone is assessed for eligibility for services.
