SUDBURY - They came together to sing and pray on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the United Church of Canada on June 15. Hundreds of United Church faithful were on hand for a special service held at Grace Hartman Amphitheatre in Bell Park on a beautiful Sunday morning. The event featured special guests the Right Rev. Dr. Carmen Lansdowne, moderator of the United Church of Canada, and renowned Scottish hymn writer and theologian Rev. John Bell.

At the age of 85, Marie Gonnella enjoys keeping busy. The Sturgeon Falls resident just returned from a 12-day cruise on Friday, and she was at the Tom Davies Arena in Lively bright and early Saturday morning to take part in the District 3 pickleball qualifiers for the Ontario 55+ Summer Games. The oldest woman taking part, Gonnella competed in two pickleball events June 14 with her ladies’ doubles partner, Simone Dumont, and her mixed doubles partner, John Halliday.

Sidestepping concerns that caused the cancellation of Greater Sudbury’s pride march in 2023 and 2024, organizers of Fierté Sudbury Pride say this year’s march will take place July 12 on the sidewalks of downtown only. This means police will not need to be involved for traffic control, which is a legal requirement for events shutting down city streets, said an organizer.
