The Lake District is rich with atmospheric pubs and coaching inns, many seemingly unchanged for centuries – and that's their charm. Don't expect sleek looks and fancy sound systems; do expect toasty fires, well-worn chairs, beamed ceilings and a cheery scruffiness. In the remoter villages and dales many have beer gardens with cracking views. Most stock a good range of locally brewed beers, and several hold regular beer festivals.

Discover where to eat in the Lake District - Cumbria offers everything from Michelin stars to down-to-earth pubs Eating out in the Lake District has changed dramatically over the past 20 years. The choice is no longer between twee tea rooms or food for hungry hikers - though both of these exist - instead it now rivals that of many a metropolitan area. An astonishing 13 restaurants boast Michelin stars (L'Enclume has three) and pubs range from the gastro to the down-to-earth and filling.

Well, it is almost impossible to step outside without your eyes being drawn to a mountain top. Indeed, the great fell-walker, Alfred Wainwright, identified 214 fells over 1,000 feet (around 300 metres) in the area, which should keep any list-ticker busy for several years.
