It’s no wonder student loan forgiveness has become such a hot button political issue among young people — there are a lot more of them saddled with debt than there used to be. A new Pew Research Center analysis showed the percentage of young adults 18 to 34 who owe money for college has risen significantly in the last 30 years, with roughly two of every five having outstanding student loans in 2022. The share of people in their early 30s, for instance, has more than doubled since 1992.
