Helen Ford WallaceSeptember 1, 2024 at 8:00 AM·2 min readI had so much fun at my high school reunion last weekend that I’m putting my party hat on ― my former Oklahoman Parties, Etc., column hat ― to share it here in a rare personal post. What made the weekend even more special was an unexpected date with a high school classmate from the ’50s, Don Howe, who called me after more than 60 years to ask me to attend the weekend with him. We had the best time and laughed all weekend.

We have covered so many topics that spanned different eras, from traditional etiquette to modern-day technology questions, as well as different generations affected by different concerns.

QUESTION: I have been out of the job market for several years. When applying for a job, do I list the dates of my high school and college graduations? Am I obligated to tell if I am married, divorced or have children? Is there a way to list my volunteer experiences as to show that I have been working in the community? Thanks for your help. CALLIE’S ANSWER: No need to put married and/or children, that is personal information your potential new employer doesn't need to know.

QUESTION: Is it ok to hint to my cousin that he needs to update his wardrobe and in general, take more time with his appearance? He always looks like he just rolled out of bed when he goes somewhere. CALLIE’S ANSWER: YES! I think you can say it with kindness. And since you’re family, it comes from love. LILLIE-BETH’S ANSWER: Good question, and one that requires finesse. First, why do you feel like you need to tell him?

QUESTION: Have we gone back to the traditional handshakes that we gave up during the pandemic? I have seen people give high fives or grab hands lately. How about hugs? Are they acceptable? CALLIE’S ANSWER: Yes. People are back to hugs and handshakes. Unless you're a germaphobe. LILLIE-BETH’S ANSWER: I think we are back to hugs and handshakes like before the pandemic, but I would hope that we are more mindful of others’ comfort level with either and also more aware of how germs are spread.
