Twins Henrietta and Sally Bollinger talk with former babysitters and fellow twins, Julia and Helena de Bres, about a life in pairs. In 1996 my twin Julia and I got the best-ever babysitting gig: a matching pair of identical twins who lived a few minutes from us in Island Bay. Their house was perched on a very steep hill overlooking Tapu te Ranga.

My identical twin, Julia, and I recently went to an art gallery talk about Diane Arbus’ famous photograph, Identical Twins, Roselle, N.J. The original 1967 print was there on the wall: a pair of matching young girls, dressed in black dresses with stiff white collars, eyeballed us from just over the curator’s shoulder.

The original 1967 print was there on the wall: a pair of matching young girls, dressed in black dresses with stiff white collars, eyeballed us from just over the curator's shoulder. The twin on the left - the one I identify with - looks retracted: her eyes are slightly hooded, her mouth tense.

"There’s no doubt queer people face much more social stigma than twins do, but using the lens of society’s erroneous beliefs about twinship can help deconstruct our culture’s most fallacious thoughts about queerness and what it means to be a queer person." https://t.co/dbZgEr1DoG https://t.co/74Krfkxoac
