    Hockey development in Namibia recently received a boost when more than 50 participants completed Level 1 and Level 2 international hockey coaching courses in Windhoek. The courses were conducted by FIH (International Hockey Federation) instructor Herman Kruis of the Netherlands, and focussed on the fundamentals of hockey coaching while also incorporating modern training techniques.

    A two-day mountain bike bonanza, the Towerbos XC Dirt Festival that will be held at Towerbos on 30 and 31 May, was recently launched in Windhoek. The festival which is being organised by Mannie Heymans of Mannie’s Bike Mecca will combine various events at the Towerbos Trails, about 12km outside Windhoek on the Daan Viljoen road, starting with a Dual Slalom ‘adrenaline ride’ and a Night Ride on Friday, 30 May.

    The FNB Women Super League is heading for an exciting climax after the main title contenders FC Ongos and Beaties FC drew 1-1 in a hard-fought encounter on Sunday. The result left the defending champions Ongos at the top of the log on 37 points from 15 matches, but Beauties are just a point behind in second place, while they also have a match in hand. In Sunday’s match both teams gave it their all in a tough encounter.

    Namibian cricketing great Craig Williams was yesterday appointed as the new head coach of the Eagles following the resignation of Pierre de Bruyn. Williams, who represented the Eagles between 2007 and 2022, is Namibia’s leading all-time run scorer with more than 15 000 runs in all formats of the game. Besides that he took 273 wickets and is one of only four Namibian bowlers to take more than 100 wickets in both first-class and List A cricket.

    FNB Unam got their Rugby Premier League campaign back on track with a 31-18 victory against Reho Falcons on Saturday, to revive their hopes of reaching the knock-out stages of the competition. There were also wins for FNB Kudus, FNB Western Suburbs and FNB Rehoboth as the battle for semifinal spots intensifies. At the HTS field Unam received stiff resistance from Falcons, but eventually ran out comfortable winners, scoring five tries to zero.
