Drikus Coetzee and Anri Greeff capped a great weekend’s cycling by winning the Nedbank Cycle Challenge on Sunday. It was the 40th anniversary of the iconic race which saw a fine turnout of about 500 riders participating in perfect weather conditions. In the men’s 100km race, Coetzee’s Hollard team mate Theuns van der Westhuizen broke away early, but Coetzee hauled him in and the two gradually increased their lead to finish well ahead of the chasing pack.

Fillipus ‘Energy’ Nghitumbwa won the battle in the ring, but lost it outside after failing to make the weight for his WBO Africa super bantamweight title defence on Saturday night. Fighting in the main bout of the Dr Sam Nujoma Boxing Bonanza at a packed Windhoek Showgrounds, Nghitumbwa made short work of his Zimbabwean opponent, Hassan Milanzi, to win the fight on a second round knockout.

Defending champions FNB Wanderers took a substantial lead in the Namibia Rugby Premier League title race while sending out a stern warning to their rivals with a 70-18 victory against FNB Grootfontein on Saturday. In other matches, Trustco United pulled off a valuable 28-26 away win against FNB Western Suburbs; FNB Unam beat FNB Dolphins 49-22 at the coast; and Reho Falcons beat Rehoboth 25-21 at Rehoboth.

Four-time world champion Max Verstappen led from pole to chequered flag to win the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday, his first victory of the 2025 season, with McLaren’s Lando Norris second. The Dutch Red Bull driver crossed the finish line almost 1.5 seconds in front of Briton Norris, who held off his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri of Australia in third.

German Cup holders Bayer Leverkusen suffered a shock 2-1 elimination at Arminia Bielefeld in the semi-finals of the competition on Tuesday. Xabi Alonso’s side were heavily favoured to reach their second successive final but were outclassed from start to finish by their underdog opponents. Jonathan Tah’s 17th-minute goal was cancelled out by a Marius Woerl strike for the hosts three minutes later.
