She succeeds Perminder Mann, CEO of Simon & Schuster, who remains an officer of the PA. Hill, managing director of academic at Cambridge University Press and Assessment (CUP), took on the presidency at the PA’s AGM, which was held on Wednesday 7th May at the Royal Society in central London.

Global academic publisher Emerald Publishing Limited has acquired Now Publishers for an undisclosed sum. Founded in 2004, Now Publishers focuses on academic content, publishing research monographs, journals and Foundations and Trends® (FnT) particularly in Business, Economics, Computer Science and Engineering. The sale comprises over 50 books, 14 peer-reviewed journals and 28 FnT serials.

Entrepreneur and founder of Putnam Investments, Doug Putman – who owns HMV UK and Toys "R" US Canada – has launched a new publishing business alongside Pete Selby, formerly of Bonnier Books UK, whose role is managing director. Putman Publishing and its first imprint, New Modern, will publish its first book in August 2025 with a further six titles before the end of the year, followed by 12 to 15 titles each year from 2026 onwards.

Rights Harvill Secker has pre-empted Jane Healey’s "seductive, opulent" historical novel about music and desire. Assistant editor Anouska Levy signed a pre-emptive offer for UK and Commonwealth rights for Crescendo and a second novel were pre-empted by Hayley Steed at Janklow & Nesbit. Harvill Secker will publish in spring 2026 at the same time as Bloomsbury US. Max is a musical prodigy and his twin sister, Natasha, serves as his manager and minder.
Publishers Association research reveals impact of literature on UK's international reputation

Around 80% of international adults believe that British literature and British academic research positively contribute towards the UK’s international reputation, according to a recent survey from the Publishers Association (PA). The findings from the new report, Publishing and soft power: Our contribution to knowledge exchange and cultural collaboration, "demonstrates the role the industry plays in global knowledge exchange, as well as attracting talent and tourism to the UK," the PA said.

Rights HarperCollins has won a nine-way auction for The Ending Writes Itself by Evelyn Clarke, a pen name for two established writers. Cicely Aspinall, publishing director at HQ, struck the deal for UK and Commonwealth rights. North American rights were simultaneously acquired in an 11-way bidding war by Sarah Stein, executive editor at Harper. Foreign rights have already sold in 11 territories, many in auctions and pre-empts. HarperCollins declined to name the agents involved.
