Famously, Ayrton Senna drove a Honda NSX-R around Suzuka in white socks and loafers, so in this latest TDS episode, Henry Catchpole does his best to pay tribute to that iconic footage. He also investigates how a car with only 290 horsepower can stand toe-to-toe with the very best supercars ever made. And he finds that it really can. This particular example is a facelifted “NA2” NSX-R from 2002.

I’m fairly familiar with Ford Escorts (yes, I still own my Mk2, and no, it’s sadly not in danger of seeing a rally stage any time soon), but I imagine my expression on getting into the Alan Mann 68 Edition for the first time was similar to that of the DH of my school on re-entering his study after someone had snuck in and rearranged his furniture – just enough to be unsettling. The Gordon Murray Automotive T.50 isn’t a car that’s defined by its numbers. At least not in the way that we’ve come to expect with modern hypercars like the Aston Martin Valkyrie, McLaren W1 and Ferrari F80. It isn’t defined by its power (661bhp) or performance figures (GMA doesn’t even quote any acceleration stats). However, there are some numbers that do provide a nice starting point for some of what the extraordinary T.50 is all about.

'How many thousands of words of utter codswallop,’ says the large glass of Bordeaux up at the bar, ‘have been written by journalists about the Porsche 911 over the years? Engine’s in the wrong place, the weight balance is all wrong. And that one out in the car park is snot green. Ghastly.’A chill draft whistles in under the pub door from off the benighted moor and the fire sparks and crackles in the hearth as a brief silence follows this somewhat forthright proclamation.

This is a first: waiting for the tide to go out so that we can start a test. North Sea waves are still gently lapping at the edges of the tarmac strip that we want to drive, so, without any Canute-like inclinations, we’ve got to hang fire for a while.
