A court in Bangladesh denied bail on Thursday to the former head of the country’s capital markets regulator, who is accused of money laundering and receiving $361,000 in bribes. Police arrested Shibli Rubayat ul Islam, the ex-chair of the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission, on Tuesday. A court in the capital, Dhaka, has now ordered him to remain in jail to face further questioning.

Two more defendants in the 2022 Feeding Our Future Fraud Scheme pleaded guilty Monday, capping off yet another case related to several dozen conspirators who stole $250 million from hungry children during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic in the United States. Ayan Jama and Mekfira Hussein, both from Minnesota, conspired to steal millions from a U.S. federal food program, designed to provide low-income families with meals for their children.

Romanian authorities arrested last week two suspects tied to an employment fraud scheme, where they allegedly obtained state and EU funds under the false pretenses of employing and training unemployed individuals. Prosecutors allege that the duo defrauded the Romanian and EU governments of roughly €166,000 ($171,000) by lying that the funds were to go towards hiring vulnerable persons, who otherwise had little hope of gaining employment.

The European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) branch in Romania indicted on Thursday 10 individuals and four companies accused of orchestrating a €1.6 million ($1.66 million) fraud scheme involving funds dedicated to helping the unemployed. The defendants allegedly stole EU and national subsidies aimed at helping unemployed individuals refine the skills sets needed to obtain job prospects, by submitting almost 200 false claims.
