(The Daily Signal) – The House of Representatives is set to vote Tuesday evening on a budget resolution that aims to pass much of President Donald Trump’s agenda. The resolution is set to extend the 2017 Trump tax cuts, coupled with $300 billion for border and defense spending. It would also raise the federal debt ceiling by $4 trillion. Andy Ogles will introduce legislation Thursday to overturn D.C. home rule in the nation’s capital during the next Congress, giving control of the city back to Congress. The Daily Caller first obtained a copy of the legislation is titled the Bringing Oversight to Washington and Safety to Every Resident (BOWSER) Act, after Democratic Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser.

President Donald Trump signed a bill into law that will require the detainment of illegal immigrants suspected of nonviolent crimes. Wednesday’s signing of the Laken Riley Act is the first of Trump’s second term. The GOP-led bill gained some bipartisan support, especially after November’s election in which border security play a prominent role in Trump’s decisive victory. An amended version of the original bill passed the Senate 64-35 on Jan. 20 and the House 263-156 two days later.

Democratic Michigan Sen. Gary Peters announced Tuesday that he will not be seeing reelection, leaving a key Senate seat open in 2026. Peters, 66, released a video saying “Thank You” for support he received throughout his time in the Senate. The announcement came as a shock to many. Peters has been serving in the Senate since 2014 and was the chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) in the last election cycle.
